The Urdu Language
A standardised register of the Hindustani language, Modern Standard Urdu or Urdu, as it is more commonly known, is historically associated with Muslims living in the Hindustan region of the sub-continent. It is also the national language of Pakistan; one of the 22 scheduled languages of India and an official language of five of India’s states.
Urdu is mutually intelligible with Standard Hindi, which is spoken by the Hindu community. In terms of grammar and structure, Hindi and Urdu are virtually identical. This is also the case at a colloquial level and in phonology and vocabulary.
When taken as a single language, the number of Hindi/Urdu speakers around the world put it in fourth place, behind Mandarin-Chinese, English and Spanish.
Urdu and English are the two official languages spoken in Pakistan and though Urdu is the native tongue of only 8% of the population, both are widely understood throughout the entire country.
Several other languages, known as provincial languages, are spoken in the various regions of Pakistan. Urdu is used in literature, education and for official business and in the courts.
